TRAGEDY Cd (Usina de sangue)
2 albums on one Cd. First time I really get to hear those scene-stars. They’re decent, but honestly, I can’t understand how they started such a trend. Everyone tries to sound like them these days, but they themselves sound a lot like MOTORHEAD, right ? Or AMEBIX, or NAUSEA. They also sound a lot like NAYTIA, PANIKOS and many other Greek crust-punk bands from the early 90’s. I don’t get it. But they’re okay. http://www.usinadesangue.com.br (Y.B.)

DIAVOLO ROSSO "never follow..." Cd (Per koro)
I read somewhere there’s ex-STACK members in the band, but I never enjoyed STACK both musically and humanly. I’m sure I did hear a couple tracks by this band on various comps before, and I was surprised to notice they’re on PER KORO, because they certainly don’t sound like your typical PER KORO band ! This album is a gem ! I went nuts over the first two songs ! They play tight, energetic, powerful and kinda original punk/Hc, with a modern sound and maybe even a couple emo or melodic influences here and there. This is great stuff ! The lyrics are quite personal, but far from being dumb or metaphorical. http://www.perkoro.de (Y.B.)

THEE UNDERTAKERS E.L.A. "crucify me" Cd (G.T.A.)
GRAND THEFT AUDIO reissued this obscure American band ; one Lp from 1981 and one demo from 1980. The production is really good for such an old band ! They had a strong ’77 punk sound. They weren’t bad, but arrived a couple years too late for that style. Still, this is a pleasant record. Oh, and I think this is one of the first "latino" bands in the Us (although they sang in English). I didn’t understand the lyrics to "zombies", were they Christians ? http://www.myspace.com/grandtheftau... (Y.B.)

-
ALIANS "pelnia" Cd (Pasazer)
Disappointment. Early ALIANS records were great, powerful and dancey punk with folk and ska influences. So typically polish ! This new album is much more ska and reggae oriented, there’s almost no punk riffs anymore ! :( And the lyrics aren’t translated ! :( Ska-punk fans should enjoy it nonetheless... http://www.pasazer.pl (Y.B.)
-
IMPACT "80-87" Cd (EU’91)
Holy shit, what an awesome digipack. 36 track discography by this influential Italian Hc-punk band. Kinda the Italian equivalent to bands like BGK, HEIMATLOS, MONSTRUACION, etc. Albums, Eps, compilations tracks, demos, you got everything here. And while they were not the best Hc band of that period, they were still cool, especially their debut Lp ! http://www.eu91serbianleague.com (Y.B.)
-
CRANKED UP "a call for solidarity" Cd (Ghetto rock)
I was sure this band was from Belgium, until I noticed they’re from the Us. They’re great ! They play tight punk, half way between ’77 punk-rock and Uk-’82 punk, with fairly good, socially aware lyrics. They make me think of a lot of bands, I can’t find which ones. THE PARTISANS are one of them. UK SUBS maybe. RANCID ? I hadn’t heard a good punk-rock band in a long time, this is a great surprise. http://www.ghetto-rock.com (Y.B.)
-
DEMOB "contractual obligations" Cd (GTA)
Yet another band I had never heard of. DEMOB were pretty good ! They were from England, and sounded like a weird mix between CRASS records’ stuff and Oï music. A couple riffs bring to mind the almighty CHRONGEN. 9 tracks + some live stuff + six extra tracks recorded in 2002 + a big booklet featuring all the lyrics & band history. Not bad at all. http://www.myspace.com/grandtheftau... (Y.B.)
-
BY MY FISTS/ IN PROGRESS split Cd (Way of life)
Both bands’ demos were totally awesome, and it was great to hear real Hardcore coming from France, at last. However, I was a bit disappointed by this Cd : I don’t know, probably it’s the production, but the songs didn’t move me as much as their early recordings. There’s not even a lyric sheet or photos of the bands provided, just boring thanx lists, which sure doesn’t help. But it’s still a good record, and they’ve added three videos worth checking out. http://www.myspace.com/bymyfists (Y.B.)
-
-
RED CAR BURNS "when everything seems to be in silence" Cd (Engineer)
I have no idea know how this Italian band ended up on ENGINEER, but the label fits them well. They play melodic Hc with "post punk" roots, and a modern emo-rock sound. They remind me of JAWBREAKER, J-CHURCH or GREEN DAY, and people have also likened them to HOT WATER MUSIC and JIMMY EAT WORLD (I’ve never heard those last two bands but I wouldn’t be surprised they sound the same). As always with that kind of music, the lyrics are introspective, and written in an approximate English. http://www.engineerrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
REJECTED YOUTH "no police state coalition" mCd (MSM1279)
For some reason I really wanted to hear this band. The Cd comes in a nice digipack and there’s two bonus videos included. The first two songs are boring. They’re slow, kinda like a mix between ’77 punk-rock and Oï. But then, the third track rips through with a strong old-style German punk-Hc sound (THE HIGGINS, UPRIGHT CITIZENS). The four next tracks were recorded live at the CBGB (!!). The sound is good, and they’re the same : two "boring" songs and two good fast ones. The lyrics deal with social topics ; big brother, Chile, police repression, life in a boring town. Interesting band (although I was expecting more). http://www.msm1279.com (Y.B.)
-
KRIMINAL POGO demo Cd-R (Ditchdiggin)
Some work was put in this demo ; it’s a professionnaly printed Cd-R which comes in a DVD-box, together with a free patch and badge ! I think it’s just too bad they didn’t go as far as printing a full-colour cover ...and a lyric sheet !! They’re from California and play good female-fronted snotty punk-rock, along the lines of other Californian bands like UXA, THE VOIDS, or even the AVENGERS and NAKED AGGRESSION. Nice job ! http://www.myspace.com/kriminalpogo (Y.B.)
-
CONSUME "consume" Cd (Insane society)
Really nice digipack. Complete discography + photos and videos ! Musically, I’m quite sure this band features ex-members of DISRUPT, and guess what, they sound like... DISRUPT a lot (especially the guitar riffs). Only slower. Yeah, play a DISRUPT 7" on 33rpm and you might get CONSUME. It’s good stuff, only a bit "slow" for my tastes. http://www.insanesociety.net (Y.B.)
-
RUNNAMUCKS "of a different breed" (6 weeks)
I believe it’s one of the first times I get to hear this band, although they’ve been around for quite some years now. Well, they aren’t bad, but I’m not knocked down either. They play chaotic uptempo hardcore-punk with an 80’s feel (Boston anyone ?) and decent negative & hateful lyrics. Ok stuff. http://www.sixweeksrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
MAKILADORAS "discography 2001-04" Cd (Cactus)
Only 11 songs, that’s short for a discography ! :) Ex-members of famous Dutch bands (SHIKARI, NO ID, PCP, CATWEAZEL...) playing uptempo crust-metal. Great musicians, powerful punk-Hc, quite intelligent lyrics. I actually thought all those metal riffs were funny. I’m not too sure I enjoyed the vocals though. http://cactusdistro.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
MACHINE GUN ROMANTICS "everything so far" Cd (625)
Typical, but pretty good thrashcore from Texas. Some songs sound a lot like INFEST ! (whom they even cover). The vocals are a bit hard to take, it’s a bit as if they had picked up some emo guy from the audience and said "ok, sing for our thrashcore band now". 35 tracks taken from their Ep + demos and live stuff. http://www.625thrash.com (Y.B.)
-
COLONNA INFAME "discography" Cd (Oi strike)
I don’t know why so many people worshipped this band. They weren’t bad, just unoriginal. This is uptempo & decent, though typical, Oï from Italy. The lyrics aren’t translated unfortunately. http://www.soarecords.it/oistrike (Y.B.)
-
CRASH BOX "veleno per voi" 2xCd (SOA)
SOA continues with his series of double-Cd discographies of classic Italian bands. This is totally awesome. 2 hours of music, 2 Cds + one big booklet documenting the history of these seminal Hc pioneers. Those tracks were recorded between 1983 and 1988, and they sound like many bands of that time ; a cross between 80’s punk and what later became known as "Hardcore". There’s two Lps, one Ep, demo and live tracks here, and while CRASH BOX never were my favourite band of the bunch, their early stuff was definitely good. I do prefer RAW POWER, INFEZIONE, NEGAZIONE or KINA though. http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)
-
WHEN MY AUTHORITIES FALL/ ARGUMENT 5.45 split Cd (Old skool kids)
I’ve already told you the future of Hardcore lies in Asia, South America or Eastern Europe, right ? WHEN MY AUTHORITIES FALL are a modern Hardcore band reminiscent of other eastern bands like DEVIL SHOOTS DEVIL or COALITION. If the band were from France, they would play boring chugga-chugga mixed with metal and emo, thankfully, they’re from Latvia and their Hardcore is fast and pissed enough to keep it interesting. I like this, although I don’t understand why they "sing" (scream) like that. ARGUMENT 5.45 are the same, only less good ; they’re a bit more metal, more emo, more weirdo. I couldn’t get into them. http://www.oskrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
HABITACION 101 "difunde y piratealo" Cd (Controversy)
Good surprise ! Once in a while, a band like this pops out of nowhere to kick your ass. HABITACION 101, from Spain, play tight, fast and powerful crust with grind, hardcore and punk influences. They even do decent covers of two awesome Spanish bands : ESCANDALO PUBLICO and HHH ! (They actually remind me of bands like ASIDE, HHH, ÖBNI, etc). Nice artwork, good political lyrics... Cool stuff. controversydistro@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
ÄRSYKE "sietoraja ylittyy" Cd
Crazy Scandinavians with those weird languages... and the bastards did not even translate their lyrics ! arghhhh. :) ÄRSYKE are a female fronted punk band, along the lines of NAKED AGGRESSION, ATTENTAT SONORE, U.X.A., etc. This is a good mini-Cd, this stuff’s not too original, but don’t hesitate to give it a try. www.arsyke.com (Y.B.)
-
TERVEET KADET "Ääretön propaganda" Cd (Propaganda)
Wow. Finnish punk-Hardcore history ; 2 Ep’s and 2 Lp’s (recorded in 1982, 83 and 84) on one Cd !! I just can’t understand why anyone would put out such a shitty Cd, with just a band photo and a couple info about recording sessions. How about big informative booklets next time ? Anwyays, I’ve never been a big TERVEET KADET fan ; they sure were one of the first bands in the world to play fast punk (hardcore), but they were always too rock’n’roll, too metal. Be it the way they dressed, the music, the lyrics, or their shitty record covers. http://www.propaganda-records.com (Y.B.)
-
DISTURBING THE PEACE Cd compilation (6 weeks)
Yummy, 15 fast-core bands from San Francisco, and about 2 tracks each. Crust, grind, punk-Hc, thrashcore, power-violence, you name it. Almost all of the songs are good, I believe only two bands sucked, and the other ones are really great. Some actually became pretty famous afterwards : IRON LUNG, VOETSEK, HATEMAIL KILLERZ, BORN/ DEAD, BLOWN TO BITS, etc. Nice job. http://www.sixweeksrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
INNER SURGE "signals screaming" Cd (Cyclone)
Modern, versatile and well-played metal from Canada. There’s elements from BIOHAZARD, PANTERA and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE here, as well as from other bands I’m not familiar with. The most powerful parts also bring to mind bands like RICOCHET, BROTHER’S KEEPER, maybe even EARTH CRISIS or CONVERGE. If I could come up with a label to classify them, I’d say "post metal". Good production and abstract political lyrics. http://www.innersurge.com (Y.B.)
-
NOMATRIX "ugly" Cd (Dead lamb)
Weird stuff. Sort of half-way between Uk classic punk and Us melodic Hardcore (ONE WAY SYSTEM meets LAG WAGON ??). The lyrics follow the same line : some deal with love or personal issues, while others show political concern. The fastest or most angry songs are cool. On the whole, this is pretty good, although these songs lack that little spark that will make me sing along in my bedroom. I’d file them on a shelf together with bands like EASTFIELD, WAT TYLER, or J-CHURCH. http://www.nomatrix.info (Y.B.)
-
MASS KOTKI "chodz zobaczyc" Cd (Emancypunx)
Geez, do people actually listen to stuff like that in Poland ? I really dislike that kind of stuff. "Hippy shit !" are the only two words that come to mind, but I’ll try and write a real review nonetheless : 14 tracks of electro-rock with pop, punk, riot grrrrrrrl elements to them. Only one bass, one drum machine and two girls singing/shouting slogans in Polish. Sounds a tiny bit like a less punk ROBOTNICKA or LE TIGRE. http://emancypunx.com (Y.B.)
-
OPCIO K-95 "best before 2004" Cd (Solitude urbaine)
I was longing to hear this Spanish band (ok, they’re from Catalonia) and I’m not disappointed. This nice digipack compiles their two first albums ; OPCIO K-95 play tight Oi with a slight French "chaos punk" sound. I like this a lot ! The lyrics are interesting, although I could do without the boring references to violence, alcohol and nationalism (I am in favour of the independence of countries like the Basque area, East timor, etc, but when all songs deal with this topic, it gets a bit boring). http://solitudeurbaine.propagande.org (Y.B.)
-
FRANK CASTLE GONNA BREAK YOUR NECK Cd-R demo
I believe this band features ex-members of Russian thrashcore band GEORGE HARRISSON. They play pretty good, typical and fashionable thraschore. Short, fast and to the point. It’s sad the lyrics aren’t provided, but title tracks like "destroy the hippie culture" or "fuck your flag" will give you an idea what they’re about ! Nothing special, but not bad at all. http://www.geocities.com/fcarmy (Y.B.)
-
OUTCOLD "Goodbye cruel world" Cd (Old skool kids)
This US band has already put out a bunch of records before. This one is in the same style, maybe a bit slower ? They remind me quite a bit of the VOORHEES ; uptempo hardcore with an 80’s feel and hateful lyrics. I won’t go crazy over them, but they’re not bad at all. http://www.oskrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
TOXIC BONKERS "seeds of cruelty" Cd (Self Made God)
Man, these guys have gone metal ! This new album still has some crustcore elements to it, but really sounds like a death metal album ! The production is pretty good, like with all metal records, and the lyrics are negative and social at the same time. Did I mention the growling vocals ? http://www.selfmadegod.com (Y.B.)
-
KIDNAP "86-89" Cd (Euthanasie)
Ok, second part discography by this famous French 80’s punk band. It’s the same problem as their first discography ; some songs are truly great, while others are almost boring. I don’t know why. But on the whole, this is a cool record ! It includes some totally awesome songs like "il se hait", "Derry" or "Charlie va tuer". I wish there had been more recordings from their later era though. http://euthanasie.records.free.fr (Y.B.)
-
GREENLAND WHALEFISHERS "amazing space" (Dead lamb)
This Norwegian band has been around for 15 years ! They play energetic traditional Irish folk music, with a strong THE POGUES influence (minus the raucous vocals). They aren’t bad at all, and I can see why they’re getting so popular, however I’m not too fond of them. I don’t know why. I believe the songs lack a little something to make them really memorable. But the music is nice nonetheless. This Cd is a compilation of rare tracks (ep’s and comps) - one hour of music ! http://www.deadlambrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
AMANDA WOODWARD "la décadence de la décadence" Cd (Old skool kids)
One Ep and one Lp by this French melodic emo band, reissued on a Russian label. Semi-intellectual lyrics, annoying screaming vocals, and good original music (well, strong MOSS ICON influence/rip-off here). I’d rather dust-off my MOSS ICON vinyls, but emo fans will enjoy, for sure. http://www.oskrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
NEW YORK AGAINST THE BELZEBU/ SORE THROAT split Cd (Power it up)
No way, I had no idea these bands were still around ! England’s SORE THROAT started as a thrashcore/Grindcore band in the late 80’s, while Brazil’s NYAB started in the early 90’s as a grindcore band. They now both play noise ! I mean, real noise. Some songs are good, but many bands have played that kind of stuff before, and I still won’t take 33 minutes of noise in a row. Oh my head... :( http://www.power-it-ip.de (Y.B.)
-
ERRÖR "la condena merecida" mCd (Self released)
Spanish modern crust a la HIS HERO IS GONE, TRAGEDY, CATHARSIS, etc, with maybe an emphasis on noisy, metal riffs. The production is good and the songs are short, which is always cool. The lyrics seem to deal with political issues (they’re not translated unfortunately). xisconetweight@yahoo.es (Y.B.)
-
THE RAZOR BLADES "songs from the edge" Cd (Grand Theft Audio)
Another cool GTA reissue. THE RAZOR BLADES were a pioneer punk-Hc band from Denmark. These 49 tracks were recorded between 82 and 84 ! It’s all good stuff, even though I prefer their mates WAR OF DESTRUCTION. THE RAZOR BLADES played quite original, almost technical, raging and powerful punk with intelligent lyrics. http://www.myspace.com/grandtheftau... (Y.B.)
-
HELLNATION "thrash wave" Cd (Läjä rds)
Oh Dog, I was soooo happy to lay my hands on this one. This is a semi-discography of the fastest Hc band that ever existed ; HELLNATION. I don’t enjoy all of their records, but most of their best recordings are featured on this comp, in particular the cult release "at war with emo" ! 36 tracks in 29 minutes, can you believe that ? With clever lyrics to top it off ? Buy it now. Rush. http://www.laja.com.br (Y.B.)
-
NEAP TIDES "stage of anoxia" Cd-R demo (Self released)
New band from the south-east of France. For a second demo, this is totally decent. The first punk-hardcore song is bad, but the next three ones are actually pretty good and much more original. Those melodic punk-Hc tunes remind me of BODA. There’s a couple metal riffs here and there, too. Too bad it didn’t come with a lyric sheet... http://www.myspace.com/neaptides (Y.B.)
-
SECRET SEVEN "take it back" Cd (Thrash steady syndicate)
Holy shit ! The layout is great. The production is great. The music is totally awesome ; super fast & super tight thrashcore from Singapore, with melodies and rage at the same time. Is this a perfect record ? It could be, unfortunately, I’ve read an interview with those guys that left me with mixed feelings ; two of them are cops, and they said their government was ’cool’. When you know that the Singaporean government is one of the most authoritative in the world, that you can’t even spit on the streets, chew chewing gums or slamdance... Hmm... Well, if you’re only in it for the music, don’t miss this one. And if the message matters to you, then have a friend tape it for you. http://thrashsteadysyndicate.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
DISCARGA "sem remorso" Cd (Läjä)
DISCARGA (not to be confused with another awesome Brazilian Hc band called DISCARGA VIOLENTA) put out a first album that I didn’t like, a split Cd with INFECT that was good, and this new album, which I thought was much better than the first one. They still play fast and raging thrashcore, but I don’t know, maybe the production fits better, or the songs are more intense. It’s really good, tight, varied and well-played fast-core. Still lacks melodic lines, according to me. http://www.laja.com.br (Y.B.)
-
EAT THIS McKINLEY "records and gasoline" Cd (Self released)
As always with that kind of bands, the packaging and layout are awesome ; and this beautiful digipack is made of 100% recycled paper ! Wow. Musically, this American trio play indie pop-rock along the lines of AT THE DRIVE IN, HOT WATER MUSIC or AGAINST ME. Or even a less powerful, poppier CRIMPSHRINE. The production is good and the lyrics are personal. http://www.eatthismckinley.tk (Y.B.)
-
I OBJECT "first two years" Cd (Punks before profit)
This band is great. I love their attitude, their lyrics are clever, the (female) singer has a great voice. Unfortunately, these early songs are quite average musically speaking. The production is average, the music is quite basic and not really fast. But it’s still a good record... http://www.i-object.com (Y.B.)
-
HANGOVER HEARTATTACK Cd comp° (Farewell)
Tributes to ultra-classic bands always suck. Everyone should know that. The 7 SECONDS tribute Cd sucked, the DEAD KENNEDYS tribute Cd’s sucked, the HHH tribute Cd sucked, etc. When originals are perfect, how could anyone play them any better ? This comp° is no exception. The bands are famous, they’re made of great musicians, but most of these cover-songs are average (none are really bad, though). However, there is one reason why you could/should buy this Cd : the packaging is one of the best I have ever seen. Awesome book, full of info about POISON IDEA !! http://www.farewellrecords.de (Y.B.)
-
BRUTAL ASSAULT "fuck you, motherfucker" mCd (Constipation)
Ok, the name of the band sucks. The title of the record sucks. The name of the label sucks. Don’t judge a book by its cover, right ? :) The inside is actually pretty good. BRUTAL ASSAULT, from Israel, sing in their native language and that’s great. The sound quality is good too. The music is pretty powerful. It’s fast punk, hardcore, thrashcore, power-violence, a little bit of all those styles mixed in a blender. The lyrics are cool. There’s some great song titles like "Do I really look like some four-eyed bookworm ?! I’m a fucking hyperactive war machine !" or "anti hippie squad" (great anti-hippie song). I personally enjoy my music when there’s more melodies, but don’t hesitate to check this one out. http://www.constipationrecords.tk (Y.B.)
-
FROM THE ASHES "mind vortex" Cd (Acoustic trauma)
Swedish grindcore/thrashcore similar to NASUM, or maybe even CATHETER or NAPALM DEATH. For some reason, I think I prefer that kind of music when it is played with a heavier sound, and without the screaming vocals. But this ain’t a bad record. http://www.fromtheashes.se (Y.B.)
-
PO BOX "...and the lipstick traces" Cd (Craze)
Tight and well-produced ska-punk from France. I’ve never been a huge fan of the genre, but this is one of the best bands I’ve heard in this style. They’re good musicians (check out those excellent bass-lines) and write surprisingly good (and intellectual) socially-aware lyrics. Comes in a nice digipack + poster. http://www.crazerecords.com (Y.B.)
-
OFFENDERS "died in custody" Cd (G.T.A.)
Yeehaw ! 80-85 was a time when life on earth was paradise ; bands would play fast and angry music, words like ’emo’, ’crossover’ or ’noisy-pop’ did not even exist, and the only shitty music styles around were new wave and disco. This is one excellent piece of plastic reissued by GRAND THEFT AUDIO ! This awesome band really deserved it. They already had a part discography out on BITZCORE (1st Lp and Ep), and this Cd has their second Lp, second Ep and first demo ! This is old style American hardcore at its best, with strong political lyrics (their bass player went on to play with M.D.C.). Their second Lp is not their best, but still rules, and these experimental riffs give them an original touch. And their demo, man, it kills. It reminds me of SUBTERRANENAN KIDS’ demo. Yummy ! http://www.myspace.com/grandtheftau... (Y.B.)
-
CATHETER/ BIRDFLESH split Cd (Civilisation)
These ain’t CATHETER’s best recordings, but they’re still pretty cool ; super-fast thrashcore/grindcore from the Usa. Good stuff. The tracks on the split with FUBAR are definitely the best they ever recorded. BIRDFLESH, from Sweden, play tight and fast grindcore, but the lyrics are more goofy and influenced by horror movies. Average stuff. http://www.civilisation-records.com (Y.B.)
-
WRETCHED "vivi ogni momento" Cd (Eu 91)
Wow, this is an awesome digipack ! The packaging is totally brilliant. It’s just too bad this ain’t a complete discography of this seminal Italian band, and that the records compiled here are the last and more metal ones. Their "la tua morte non aspetta" Lp ain’t too good, but the 1987 Ep is great, and so is the live recording. There are also great photos and videos added ! http://www.eu91serbianleague.com (Y.B.)
