ASIDE/ SHORTCUT split Cd (Boislève)
This Cd took ages to come out. ASIDE first recorded their tracks... hmm... when was that, 5 years ago maybe ? Then the tracks got lost by some fascist computer, and the band had to go back to the studio to re-record everything. And then they took a couple more years to finish the artwork. In the meantime, SHORTCUT, a new band featuring two ASIDE members was born, and they were also looking for someone to release their album. That’s when I came in. Being close friends to them, I offered to put it out as a split release. I wanted to release a Cd with a "nice", or let’s say different packaging, just as all the other releases on my label, and offered them with several solutions including a professional "digifile" just as the HHH Cd I had just put out. Several members of the bands insisted on a plastic case so we ended up splitting half and releasing this digipack. Half plastic, half cardboard, and no recycled paper. How ironic from bands singing songs about protecting the environment. Anyways. Enough babbling. ASIDE play strong, diverse crust-core with dual vocals. While the production ain’t their best, I love that mix of various influences (punk-rock, old school Hc, ska...) in their music. SHORTCUT play more typical straight-forward Hardcore with political lyrics as well. They deliver some really great songs, but some others were more "average". Here again, I don’t like the production much (but the sound is very good). coinxxxcoin@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)

DISCONNECT Lp (Spacement records)
When I first saw the packaging I thought to myself "this looks so much like MOSS ICON !" ; I really wanted to like this records... and I think I did. :) This is really innovative Hardcore, melodic, bass-driven, heartfelt, I dare not say emo. No, it’s not really emo. Maybe like a really melodic BLACK FLAG ? It’s a bit too arty & experimental for me but DISCONNECT are an interesting band. The lyrics deal with social matters and the booklet is really cute. http://www.spacementreno.com (Y.B.)
-
SOUL ÉMIGRÉ "2001-2003" Ep (Spacement rds)
Posthumous transatlantic melodic emo-Hc project. The label sells this as a masterpiece, but it’s only emo ! Emo mixed with typical Us melo-punk maybe ? (DIVIDE AND CONQUER, I SPY, I FARM,...). Makes me think of early 90’ bands like MEREL, 1.6 BAND, etc. Socially aware, intellectual lyrics. http://www.spacementreno.com (Y.B.)

DOGPRINT #3 fanzine/catalogue
The zine part is getting bigger and bigger, and so is YELLOW DOG’s catalogue ! It’s really nice to see a distro (even more a German distro) which such cheap prices. Besides ads, there are also interviews with BURIAL, HELLSHOCK, SKRÄCK, IDIOT SAVANT, MADAME GERMEN, PLAGUE MASS, HERO DISHONEST and SKARP. The interviews sounded longer and more in-depth than before, which is also a plus. The sad thing is that half of these interviews were left in German ! :( http://www.yellowdog.de (Y.B.)

UNLOGISTIC + STANLEY KUBI, Clermont-ferrand (France), 22/11/2004, @ Local AC63 (show review)
UNLOGISTIC haven’t changed ; they’re still totally crazy and play pretty fast, tight old school Hardcore with a drum machine and screaming vocals. They’re ok as they are, but with a real drummer and a more serious approach to things, they could be an awesome band. ;) STANLEY KUBI (featuring members of UNLOGISTIC) play even more crazy experimental Hardcore. I don’t know. There’s a bit of folk, jazz, noisy, Hc in it. (Y.B.)

UP AGAINST/ BEYOND DESCRIPTION split Cassette (Masowa kultura)
These two bands fit will on a split release, as they both play raw punk. The UP AGAINST tracks are from the band’s two Ep’s ; they play upbeat, raw punk. I like the band name, but the music is only "ok". The BEYOND DESCRIPTION tracks are taken from their early Cd on PROFANE EXISTENCE ; I like their more recent recordings much more, but these old tracks are pretty good too. Nice big fold-out tape cover. mkxhub@go2.pl (Y.B.)

INNER TERRESTRIALS + LA FRACTION + SIX EIGHT + CHARLY’S ANGELS, Rennes (France), 06/11/2004, @ l’Antipode (show review)
I had never seen so many people in this place. What, 600, 700 people maybe ? It was great to see all those familiar faces again. CHARLY’S ANGELS, a local female fronted punk-rock’n’roll band did an ok show ; they’re not bad but not really original either. SIX EIGHT from Nantes, reminded us a lot of LA MANO NEGRA. The front man even looked like MANU CHAO ! They were ok, good musicians, but the music was a bit too "fun", too "rock" for us. LA FRACTION were great, as usual. They started off playing their FLEAS AND LICE cover which was funny as hell, and played a good set afterwards. INNER TERRESTRIALS were the same ; good show as usual. Their punk and dub songs "bored" me, but their ska tunes were awesome and got everyone dancing ! Great show. Thanx MASS PROD. (Y.B.)

UNBORN/ PURIFICATION split Cd (Kerosene)
Damn, I didn’t even know these bands were still around. UNBORN still play their cool brand of fast thrash metal with quite political lyrics. PURIFICATION do the same, with a heavier sound. It seems they have gotten away from the tough-guy/ Hardline shit to gain a more social & political approach. I don’t know. Check it out for yourself. But don’t say I didn’t warn you ; this is metal ! http://www.kerosene-recordings.de (Y.B.)
-
DOGPRINT #2 fanzine
Same as issue one ; the whole YELLOW DOG (german Hc/ punk/ crust label) catalogue enhanced with a few interviews (WAR CRY, PHOBIA, ABHORRENCE, GENERAL SURGERY and CRUDE BE (this one was left in german unfortunately)). http://www.yellowdog.de (Y.B.)
-
SKARP + THE FINGER + REMORSE, Vichy (France), Kamizole, 31/10/2004 (show review)
This was my first time in this long-running squat, and it will be the last as they’ll be evicted soon. Only about 40 people showed up, but the bands were not really well-known either. REMORSE, from Clermont-Ferrand, are a good "modern Hardcore" or should I say metal band. They play really fast, intense and intricate metal. This kind of music is very fashionable, but they do it well. SKARP, from Seattle, Usa, play pretty good crust-punk with a female singer. They were not very original but still pretty good. Unfortunately we had to leave before seeing that local band THE FINGER, sorry guys ! (Y.B.)
-
INNER TERRESTRIALS "x" Cd (Mass prod)
Just saw them live and they were good as usual. This new Cd’s pretty good. I have always believed this band had a huge potential but didn’t use it to its full. There are some truly awesome songs on this album, but a couple others are only "ok". The lyrics are pretty good, maybe a bit down-to-earth, and deal with GMO’s, animal rights, travellers, the british monarchy, etc. I think I like the reggae parts better than the punk ones. http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
DOGPRINTS #1 fanzine
This is basically the whole YELLOW DOG catalogue (lots of Cds, Lps, Eps & tapes at cheapo prices) enhanced with a few interviews of international punk/ Hc/ crust bands : REMAINS OF THE DAY, TWISTED SYSTEM, INNER CONFLICT, SOON IN HERE, AMEN 81, CONSUME, DEBRIS. The interviews are quite short but pretty good, apart from a couple bands that don’t take the time to answer the questions properly. And it’s sad a couple interviews were left in German. http://www.yellowdog.de (Y.B.)
-
TEXAS MOTHERFUCKERS "retaliation" Cd (Motherfuckin’ records)
Don’t let the name mislead you, they’re from Sweden. TEXAS MOTHERFUCKERS play modern rock’n’roll ; quite fast, powerful, well-produced, with maybe a few garage or punk influences here and there. At times they bring to mind the NEW BOMB TURKS. They’re too rock’n’roll for me, but I have a lot of acquaintances who would love them. http://www.texasmf.com (Y.B.)
-
MISFITS "violent world" Cd (bootleg)
There’s a bunch of Cds around these days that are obviously made by the same guy (maybe VACATION HOUSE from Italy ?), and they all suck. Be it the GORILLA BISCUIT, SSD, 7 SECONDS or MISFITS boots, they suck. The sound is always bad, and above all, there’s absolutely no information whatsoever about the bands, no video tracks, no photos, no lyric sheets, nothing. Just some nerd trying to cash in on the Hardcore subculture. [no address, coward] (Y.B.)
-
NEKROMANTIX "dead girls don’t cry" Cd (Hellcat)
Damn, I hadn’t heard a psychobilly record in about 15 years ! Me and my friends used to be into that sound quite a bit. It’s funny it’s getting "popular" again. NEKROMANTIX play pretty fast, quite original, and well produced psychobilly with lyrics taken straight from horror movies. Pleasant stuff ! [in stores] (Y.B.)
-
DOWNCAST Cassette (?)
Some people still remember DOWNCAST, eh ? This great early 90’s band were some of the first to play emotional Hardcore, together with BORN AGAINST, MOSS ICON or RORSCHACH. They influenced so many bands that tried to copy them without ever managing to do it properly, and started the whole emo trend. DOWNCAST played kind of moshing Hardcore with political lyrics and emotional vocals. This tape only features their album, they should have released a complete discography instead. The lyrics are not provided in English, which is sad, and the sound could have been better (it’s ok). [Bogdan Gluc, Sw. Anny 55 A, 34400 Nowy tard, Poland] (Y.B.)

-
LIBERTINAGEM Cd (L-dopa)
Holy shit, this is the most awesome packaging I have ever seen. "A commercial suicide" as they put it ! :) The Cd comes in a small envelope inside a huge photocopied booklet wrapped up in a huge cardbox. This brazilian band is really unique ; they write a lot of very original and progressive lyrics, and tackle a lot of sexually oriented issues. Unfortunately, they don’t do much for me musically ; they’re really into experimental Hardcore, emo, hippie stuff. Try and imagine a mix between BORN AGAINST, BIKINI KILL, FUGAZI and HAIR (yes, that hippie opera from the 60’s). Interesting nonetheless. http://www.ldopa.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
INSTITUTE "the piano player" Cd (Yellow dog)
Slow, heavy, dark, noisy, intricate punk-Hc from Germany. No, wait ! They’re from the Us, but on a German label. Think : NEUROSIS, DYSTOPIA, FACE DOWN IN SHIT. The fast parts are good. The slow ones bore me. No lyric sheet included. http://www.yellowdog.de (Y.B.)
-
SOON IN HERE + WHO’S MY SAVIOUR + ? + SIGYCOP, Thiers, 02/10/2004, @ l’Ecole (show review)
Another concert lost in the middle of nowhere… and although there were three rock shows in the area that night, still about 40 kids turned up. SIGYCOP were better than on the previous sunday. They still need to practise more, but they’re a young band. Then, another band made up of WHO’S MY SAVIOUR people got on the bill ; they played sloooow, heavy sludge-core with synthesizers. Hmm… I can’t say I enjoyed them much. WHO’S MY SAVIOUR, on the other hand (featuring members of ABUSO SONORO and WOJCZECH) played good, fast raging grindcore. SOON IN HERE were totally awesome. I wish they had played in front of a bigger audience. These nice Israeli blokes played tight & raging old school hardcore with New York Hc parts. They really had a lot of energy to share. I bought their two Cds, see review elsewhere. (Y.B.)
-
BOOTPRINTS ACROSS ITALY Cd comp (Bootprint)
I don’t know, this looks like a bootleg, but if so, it’s a cool one ; it features all the first Italian skinhead bands, 6 of them, 7 eps, 33 tracks from the early 80’s ! There’s some really rare and great stuff like NABAT, SHOCKIN’ TV, HOPE & GLORY... I have no idea about the bands’ politics though. There’s some band info in Italian, and copies of the back & front covers for all these Ep’s. [no address] (Y.B.)
-
AND THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS Cd compilation (European nightmare rds)
Subtitled "a worldwide hardcore compilation", and that’s exactly what it is. It is nice to see bands from Peru, Argentina, Croatia (how about Asian countries next time ?) together with German and Us bands on a compilation. This said, none of the bands are bad, but there aren’t any stand-outs on this Cd ; most of the bands play New York Hc, which is not my favourite style although none of them sound really metal. And there is no booklet provided. To sum this up, I’d say this is an interesting document, but I wouldn’t spend much money on a comp like this. Mnienhaus1979@aol.com (Y.B.)
-
YOUTH BRIGADE/ MINOR THREAT split cassette
This is obviously a bootleg, from Poland. The music’s pretty good, but this tape doesn’t really offer anything new : all MINOR THREAT songs have appeared on various records (with various recordings), and so did YOUTH BRIGADE’s (I guess ?). The only positive aspect is you can now get these classic Hc tunes for cheap. [no address] (Y.B.)

AGROTOXICO + FLICTS + LOS DOLARES + ALTERCADO + SIGYPOP, Clermont-Ferrand, 26/09/2004, Local AC (show review)
Hard to believe 5 bands would play in such a small place on a Sunday night ! And what a line-up ! Figure this : one band from Venezuela, one band from Chile, and two bands from Brazil ! This was an all-time dream come true. :) SIGYPOP are a new local band. They play really basic punk with a few reggae/dub songs, and need to practice more. THE FLICTS, from Brazil, play good, tight, typical Brazilian punk-rock. During the sound-check they were playing CLASH and COLERA songs, to give you an idea. They started the show saying something like "we are FLICTS from Brazil, we like beer, football and anarchy". AGROTOXICO ruled the place with their powerful brand of punk-Hardcore (bordering on metal ?). "This is the kind of bands that would fit well on MASS PRODUCTION", I thought to myself ! Think : POISON IDEA, ACAO DIREITA, etc. I was a bit disappointed by LOS DOLARES, who play ok but really typical crustcore, with typical anarchist lyrics too. I was looking forward to seeing ALTERCADO because I had loved their first Cd, and they were totally great ; fast, raging south American Hardcore with an old school flavour. Yes ! This was a great show, too bad a couple assholes got into a fight with the LOS DOLARES people and smashed a window. I got back home regretting we hadn’t beat them up in return... (Y.B.)
-
GOOD RIDDANCE "cover ups" Cd (Nh-n)
This is the best band of the whole EPITAPH/ FAT WRECK crew (together with PROPAGANDHI of course). This album features all the cover songs they ever recorded ; I don’t care for some of the bands covered (KISS, MODERN ENGLISH, THE KINKS...), but a couple rule like INSTED, BATTALION OF SAINTS, GOVERNMENT ISSUE or the almighty CHRONGEN. If this can help the kids find out about classic and real Hardcore bands, eh, why not ? http://www.good-riddance.com (Y.B.)
-
MOKSHA "the five leafs of oblivion" mCd (Underhill)
Spanish rockin’ metal-emo with a big production and dark metal lyrics. Metal is the key-word here. http://www.underhillrcs.com (Y.B.)
-
HERO DISHONEST cassette
I had never heard this band before, although they released several 7"’s, Lp’s and demos in 2001 and 2002. I guess this russian cassette compiles everything recorded so far, that is to say 62 (yes, 62 !) tracks of fast, tight and raging punk-Hc. This band is great ! It’s hardcore with deep punk roots, melodies (but not too many), anthemic choruses (just when needed), and nice socially aware, critical lyrics. They bring to mind SEEIN’ RED, JUGGLING JUGULARS, and maybe DS-13, VITAMIN X... The sound quality is good, the tape comes with a small booklet, oh yeah ; they’re from Finland. http://www.ifsociety.com/herodishonest (Y.B.)
-
RED REVOLVER "demo" Cd-r
Linear and a bit basic Hc-punk from Malaysia. The sound quality is decent, the music is decent, the lyrics (in both English and Malaysian) deal with social issues... This demo was recorded 2 years ago, so if the band’s still together, I’d advise you to check them out. pistolmerah@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
MARCEL DUCHAMP "buscando luz de topos" Cd (Masapunk)
The fastest songs make me think of later LOS CRUDOS, but this Chilean band also draws influences from punk, emo, and technical Hardcore. The sound is good, the songs are short, the lyrics are political and the artwork is a bit weird. I believe they’re a bit too intellectual for my tastes. http://www.masapunk.org (Y.B.)
-
GENOCIDE "we rape the sky, we rape the hell" Cd (Magnicidio)
Their previous (first ?) album had made a good impression on me. This one has a powerful production that suits their music well, but I also believe it sounds more metal, which is sad. So let’s sum it up this way : powerful metallic grind desde Mexico, con Death metal or gore-grind influences, and strong political lyrics ! politicgrind@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
TIGER ARMY "ghost tigers rise" Cd (Hellcat)
What’s going on at EPITAPH (or HELLCAT) these days ? I received the NEKROMANTIX Cd and now another psychobilly album pops in ! TIGER ARMY aren’t as good as NEKROMANTIX. They play slower, more melodic psycho/ rock-a-billy with a more rock approach. At times, they make me think of CHRIS ISAAC, whom I like quite a bit (yeah, d’you have a problem with that ?!). I think the production (guitars in particular) lack power. Overall, this is a very decent album if you’re into that style. The cover artwork is ugly and the lyrics deal with love songs and horror themes, they are ok. [in stores] (Y.B.)
-
TAKE NO HEROES cassette compilation (Cactus distro)
This is the tape version of the Cd that came out last year. What can I say ? I love it. 10 international fast Hardcore bands from 10 different countries. The sound quality is a bit muffled on this tape, but it’s no big deal, and you can now get these recordings at a cheapo price ! (see Cd review elsewhere). http://www.cactusdistro.cjb.net/ (Y.B.)
-
P.O.O.R. (Proof Of Our Resistance) Cassette (Outcast’s impact)
I think this compilation came out quite a while ago, on a label from Singapore. It’s a pro-quality tape comp featuring 20 bands from around the world. Side A is more NyHc oriented, while side B is more punk-Hc. The sound quality is only "decent", which is a bit sad. I would say the best bands were ASIDE, REVOLT and DECIMATION OF AUTHORITY. Give it a try. trashkore@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
UP YOURS ! Cassette compilation (Middle finger)
Same as above ; I think this tape came out a while ago, but I’m reviewing it nonetheless. It’s a good document on the Filipino punk/ Hc scene from the late 90’s. Styles range from punk-rock to melodic Hc to fast Hardcore. 19 bands. Highlights include ROBINHOOD CREW, SIGNAL 3, and THE ISTUKAS OVER DISNEYLAND. johnfishbone@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
CIDER BREAKFAST "anti patriotic Frankenstein" Cd (Dirty punk)
Ex-members of IRONIX (see review somewhere below) playing the same brand of uptempo spikey-punk. I’ll write the same review : not too original but decent fast-paced punk, ok sound quality but poor production. That’s sad. If they went into a really good studio, they’d have the ability to put out a pleasant album. Sincere sounding socially aware lyrics… Should I mention the really ugly cover, too ? dirtypunk@wanadoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
INNER CONFLICT "compilation 96-02" Cd (Horror business)
When I first heard this band, I told myself "what’s the fuss all about ?", but after a few listens, this Cd has grown on me. INNER CONFLICT are a german punk band with a drum machine and awesome female vocals. The drum machine is no problem in this case, the guitar riffs are great and quite melodic, but it’s the female singer that makes the band stand out. And did I mention they cover favorites of mine like SPERMBIRDS, ACTIVE MINDS, etc ? Decent social lyrics. http://www.twisted-chords.de (Y.B.)
-
KTS "legende urbaine" Cd (Let’s go)
This new and young band from Paris plays slightly basic punk-Oï, bringing to mind PARIAPUNK, FINAL BLAST, BRIGADA FLORES MAGON, maybe some other bands like ONE WAY SYSTEM, without being as good as any of the fore mentioned. The sound is good, this is a really decent first album, I was sad to notice none of the lyrics were printed, especially considering they seem to be of a social nature (KTS stands for Kick The System). frenxkts@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
LES FEMMES "no id" Cd (Dialektik)
Wow, LES FEMMES (women, in english – weird name, uh ?) sound like a poppier LA FRACTION or HEYOKA. They play tight melodic punk/ pop-punk with great female vocals. The lyrics are decent, the songs sung in French are particularly excellent, especially that title track "no id". This is a good record ! http://www.dialektik.propagande.org/ (Y.B.)
-
LA REPLIK "saint-Roger live" Cd (Crash disques)
Fifty minutes recorded live in 2001 by this French acoustic folk-rock-traditional-punk band. If any of you remember LOS CARAYOS, LES ENDIMANCHES or ZEBDA, this will give you an idea of the music they play. I saw them live and thought they were ok, this Cd is ok as well but it still isn’t punk enough for my ears. I was pleasantly surprised by the really political lyrics though. http://www.lareplik.com (Y.B.)
-
BURNING HEADS + PHARE OUEST + ? + ?, Les Ancizes, 27/07/2004 (show review)
Well, it was funny to see the BURNING HEADS (long running French melodic Hc band on EPITAPH records) play in such a lost, small village a few kilometres away from our house ! I forgot the names of the first bands, but they weren’t too good. PHARE OUEST were a pretty commercial rap band from Paris. Average rap. The BURNING HEADS, whom I hadn’t seen for a decade, sound a bit more noisy and melodic than before, but still play tight melodic Hc, and even played an old song for my pleasure. It was funny to notice we were the oldest people in the place. (Y.B.)
-
MDC + 100 RAISONS, Rennes, 14/07/2004, @ Mondo bizarro, (show review)
Vincent from MASS PRODUCTION had just given to me the 100 RAISONS Cd, which I had liked, so I was eager to see them live. To be honest, I was expecting something better, but they were still ok. Imagine folk-punk bands like KLINIKA or ALIANS or even THE POGUES, sung in French. I had already seen MDC a few times, but I think this was their best French show ever. They played all their classic songs + a couple new ones, and the audience enjoyed them. Great show, and a nice way to say farewell to my birthplace ! (Y.B.)

NABLA "document" Cd-r demo
Gosh !! This Cd-r is as interesting as the HALF THE BATTLE Cd-r reviewed below. Two awesome bands in a row ! Wow ! It’s just too bad NABLA recently disbanded ! :( They’re one of those "modern Hardcore bands" ; but when I say "modern Hardcore" I’m not talking about all those shitty emo-metal bands trying to pass as Hardcore. NABLA really have strong (old school) Hardcore roots, and mix them up with various other styles like grindcore, crust, emo… The production is top-notch, they’re really good musicians, they come from Serbia which goes to show, one more time, that the future of Hardcore doesn’t lie in America or Western Europe. This is a totally rad Cd-r, I was just a bit disappointed by the dark and introspective lyrics. I hope the ex-members will start new bands ! nabla@antisocial.com (Y.B.)
-
SUNRISE PEOPLE IN SUNSET DAYS 3 way split Cd (Strange fruit)
This is what I call supermarket music. "Hardcore" that has mellowed out so much it sounds more like indie pop than anything else (and I don’t even know if there’s anything "indie" about those bands). The first band is decent (THE MILES APART – ex-EVERSOR, from Italy). LIGHTS AT AMBER and MORNING BEFORE suck. http://www.strangefruit.de (Y.B.)
-
HALF THE BATTLE Cd-r (Take 4)
Holy shit ! I hadn’t heard such an interesting and original Hardcore band in years ! Where d’you think they’re from ? America ? Sweden ? France ? Come on… they’re from Asia of course ! HALF THE BATTLE features ex-members of FEUD. They play old school Hardcore with a couple noisy riffs, heavy breakdowns, they’re really quite original. I’m not familiar with current US bands, but they might be sounding like AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, TERROR, etc (??). At times they make me think of RAMBO minus the thrashcore parts, because of those moshable parts backed up by chanted choruses. The production is ace, the lyrics are introspective and really good. This is one of the best bands I’ve heard in 2004 ! easy@sxe.com (Y.B.)

ABSTRACTION catalogue
I was surprised at how big this distro had become over the years. They have tons of political pamphlets, zines, flyers, magazines, books (mostly in French) as well as punk, Hardcore & emo Cds, vinyls, tapes. DIY prices. http://www.abstract.fr.st (Y.B.)

WE’RE GONNA FIGHT #1 newsletter (in English)
Seb’s sent me a whole bunch of zines and newsletters, and I’ve taken ages to read and review them. Great stuff ! w.g.f@free.fr (Y.B.)
