THE HIGGINS "who the fuck are you ?!" Cd (MSM 1279)
Great German punk-Hardcore bringing to mind classic bands like UPRIGHT CITIZENS ; tight and sometimes melodic or anthemic songs. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the lyrics, which aren’t bad at all but rather personal and not really in-depth. Nice stuff nonetheless. http://www.msm1279.com (Y.B.)
-
THE STRAP-ONS "punk on punk crime" Cd (Valiant death)
US punk-rock with strong ’77 or punk’n’roll roots. Not bad, not groundbreaking either. Weird/absurd lyrics that don’t seem to make any sense. http://www.thestrap-ons.com (Y.B.)
-
YOUNGANG "canzoni ribelli" Cd (Lean on me)
Their first album was really too basic. The production here is much better, and the concept is original ! YOUNGANG is an Italian Oï band with strong anarchist views, and all the songs here are covers of traditional anarchist songs ! And the original versions are included as well, so you can compare both versions ! This is pretty good, although I do prefer those original versions, hehe... http://leanonme.free.fr (Y.B.)
-
ABSTAIN "discography" Cd (SOA)
Aaaargh ! Everything this US band has ever put out, besides the live Cd. Awesome super fast thrashcore/crustcore/grindcore/hardcore with cool lyrics. 80 fucking minutes of music !! This is great from start to finnish ! Includes covers of TERRORIZER, DROPDEAD, DESTROY, DISRUPT and AGATHOCLES, just to give you an idea how they sound like. http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)
-
THE PARTISANS "idiot nation" Cd (Dr Strange)
Yes, this is THE PARTISANS we would listen to when we were young, and who wrote classics like "17 years of hell" or "Police story". They’re back, and although I hate reunions, I believe they aren’t the worst amongst all those "back from the deads". The music is tight and clean, the lyrics are smart ; a couple songs are pleasant. It’s funny, but I actually believe they don’t sound like THE PARTISANS that much, but rather like later THE CLASH ! It’s good stuff, but still too rock, too polished. http://www.drstrange.com (Y.B.)

FOR THE REAL mCd (Hardcore trooper)
This French band features members of RIGHT FOR LIFE and play typical old school NyHc not unlike MADBALL or NEGATIVE APPROACH. They even cover the CRO-MAGS. They have a song against religion and one against vivisection, yet some other songs are just a(nti)-political or goofy. [->medihctrooper@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
TROMATIZED YOUTH "Nantes pride" mCd (Hardcore trooper)
This is basically a side-project by members of FOR THE REAL (see above) ; they play the same style of old style NyHc, maybe a tiny bit more old school, and have an obsession with the movie Toxic avenger. Other songs deal with their city, their crew, Pc-ness, skate boarding, etc... [->medihctrooper@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
POINTING FINGER "Milestone" Cd (Good will)
Can you spell cliché ? If you can’t, pour some CHAIN OF STRENGTH, GORILLA BISCUITS and late YOUTH OF TODAY in a blender, you’ll get POINTING FINGER and see what I mean. The tempo has slowed down a lot, which is sad, and the lyrics are all about lost friendships and... friendships lost ; where’s all the political stuff gone ? Their early recordings were so awesome ! Kids don’t care about anything anymore. Yet I’m sure they’ll sell thousands... http://www.goodwillrecords.net (Y.B.)

PAVILIONUL 32 + HÖRRÖR + CALAVERA + ?, Le percy (France), 20/09/06, @ salle festive (show review)
The first band was a local band featuring members of the REVENGERS and playing basic punk-rock. CALAVERA came next and it was nice to see a rap band for a change, and a good one at that ! Excellent stuff, featuring a female vocalist which is rare enough to point out. PAVILIONUL 32 were great ; fast Hardcore from Romania with political lyrics, unfortunately the sound quality wasn’t the best, and that’s also when the drunk-punks and the anti-pogo league started to argue. Yawn. HÖRROR (from Spain, not the NyHc band) bored me with their unoriginal brand of fashionable dis-beat/emo-crust. Nice show overall. (Y.B.)
-
RES GESTAE mCd (Direccion positiva)
Nice to hear stuff like that coming from Colombia. The future of Hardcore definitely lies in South Asia and South America. RES GESTAE play fast & raging Hardcore, with modern influences thrown in ; metal and emo. The music is really good, quite old school oriented, but I just can’t bear the screaming vocals. The lyrics are great and intelligent, although I could do without the "us versus them"/ "we’re good they’re bad" imagery. They do a CATHARSIS cover ; how come I’m not surprised ? www.xresgestaex.8m.com (Y.B.)
-
LA ZONE Cd (Mass prod)
This new band from Brittany, France, play fairly typical, uptempo punk-rock with mostly female vocals. They sound a bit like HEYOKA. The lyrics are a bit naïve but still ok, as for the music, some melodies or faster parts are really cool but they really need to get a personality on their own. http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
MAKEOUTMUSIC "get off my soapbox" mCd (Self released)
I said their previous Cd sounded a lot like NO FX, early NO USE FOR A NAME or early PROPAGANDHI, and this new one won’t change my mind about that. The vocals and guitars totally sound like NO FX, only the rhythm beats are faster and more powerful. I like it. It’s a good record, but with graphics like those I was expecting some political lyrics, and they’re more of an introspective nature... http://www.makeoutmusic.net (Y.B.)
-
LIBYAN HIT SQUAD promo-Cd (Bony orbit rds)
Their bio states they stand somewhere between 80’s punk, garage, and 70’s rock ; that sounds fair to me, although I would say their main influences are early 80’s punk-Hc bands like THE FREEZE, BLACK FLAG, MEATMEN, DESCENDENTS or (early) DEAD KENNEDYS. They’re actually pretty good, but where’s the goddamn lyric sheet ? I don’t care about band photos... :( http://myspace.com/thelibyanhitsquad (Y.B.)
-
CELLSCAPE Cd-r (Lacrymal)
This band from the South of France claim they are influenced by CONVERGE, BREACH, MELT BANANA and ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, and indeed, they play an unusual mix of metal/ emo/ modern Hc and electronic music (samples). They do their thing well. I’d give them extra points for trying to sound different, but they’re definitely not my cup of tea. http://www.thecellscape.com (Y.B.)
-
SET MY PATH/ DEVIL SHOOTS DEVIL split Cd (Old school kids)
Yummy... Hardcore from far-off countries. SET MY PATH are a SxE metal band from Sweden. They’re ok, although quite generic, and should have started 10 years ago when everyone was going crazy for CONGRESS and EARTH CRISIS’ stuff. DEVIL SHOOTS DEVIL kick ass. They’re from Belarus and are awesome ! They remind me of COALITION from Poland ; tight old school Hardcore with a modern touch, dual vocals, and punk-Hc roots. Great stuff. I’m looking forward to hear more. Good lyrics by both bands, to top it all. http://www.oskrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
NO ONE IS PERFECT "barmy life" Cd (self released)
These guys already put out a demo, and maybe this album should have remained one, too. They’re a new band from the north-east of France and play a mix of punk, Hardcore, melodic Hardcore, and maybe rock as well. All in all they’re pretty decent, though not too original. I wish they would sing in French (their accent is a bit strong), and that they would provide their records with a lyric sheet, too ! Let’s wait for a few months and see how it all turns out. http://www.nooneisperfect.com (Y.B.)
-
INNER TERRESTRIALS "live in Auxerre" Dvd (Mass prod)
15 songs by this famous Uk reggae-punk band, recorded live in France in 2002. The songs are taken from all their 3 Cds, the video shooting is good and so is the sound quality. It makes for a very decent DvD although I would have much preferred if they had shot a smaller show (instead of a big festival). http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
DOBERMANN "chimiquement méchant" Cd (Mass prod)
Their previous split Cd was excellent, and this one does not disappoint. It’s like the RAMONES ; all their songs sound the same, without ever getting boring. Straight and to the point typical French punk-rock reminiscent of bands like GONOKOX, LES IMBIBES, LES RATS or PARABELLUM, with great socially aware lyrics that are hateful, snotty and positive at the same time. That’s punk ! http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
OPENIGHTMARE "pinks of the vintage" Cd (Vegas rds)
OPENIGHTMARE are one of those hard-to-classify bands. This is their second Cd, the layout is nice and the lyrics are pretty good. They remind me of early 90’s versatile punk bands like DESERT CULTUREL and TOXXIC TV, but they sound more rock (and consequently less good). There’s a bit of punk, a bit of Hardcore, of melodic Hc, of rock’n’roll, of pop, all mixed up into one well-produced album. I can’t say I like it much, but there are some good moments. http://www.openightmare.net (Y.B.)
-
SIX TOYS "forbidden war" Cd (Craze rds)
I think there’s been quite a few bands going by the name SIX TOYS. This one hails from Belgium, and plays a mix of melodic Hc, modern Hc, and post-Hc. On the whole I believe the production is much too clean, and the lyrics don’t make enough sense to me. These guys have basically completely mellowed out and probably have high ambitions, however, the more powerful songs are pretty good and bring to mind later PROPAGANDHI, later BAD RELIGION, PN, and other modern bands I’m not familiar with. They should go far. http://www.sixtoys.be (Y.B.)

PLUS LOIN QUE... #5 fanzine (in French)

NOCIVO "reedicion Lp + Mq" (Victimas del progresso records)
I can’t tell you how much I love this ! This is one of the 10 best bands I ever heard, together with Heimatlos, HHH, Dead kennedys, and a bunch of others. This Cd has their Lp and cassette, I wonder if they ever recorded anything else ? NOCIVO, from Spain, played terrific, raging and versatile Hardcore-punk ! Fast thrashy parts, breaks, melodic lines, political lyrics,... this is spanish Hardcore at its best, recorded in 1991 and 1992, just a couple years after classic bands like L’odi social, Subterranean kids, GRB, Anti-dogmatikss, Monstruaccion, etc. angelote66@yahoo.es (Y.B.)
-
MOLOKO PLUS "make my day" Cd (Tpz shit)
This was a pretty good surprise. MOLOKO PLUS, from Spain, play a mix of melodic Hc, garage, and old style (80’s) Hardcore with socially aware and personal lyrics. I won’t listen to this a thousand times, but once in a while it makes for a pleasant listen. No problem. I just wish they would sing in their native tongue. ;) http://www.tpzshitrecordings.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
ASFIXIA Ep (Counteract rds)
Oooooh, these guys have heard too much ANOMIE ! Damn, if someone had told me "this is ANOMIE’s unreleased first demo", I would have believed them. :) Ok, they play a bit faster, their sound is a bit more crusty, and they’re not as good musicians. The music is truly great, fast crustcore with emo riffs, but I have a real hard time with the vocals. The (female) singer has a great voice and can sing, but she tries too much to sound like ANOMIE’s singer, and she just doesn’t have Kathleen’s voice. Big booklet and nice splatter vinyl, too. asfixiavegan@gmail.com (Y.B.)
-
ASFIXIA + CHACHI ARCOLA + DEMANDE A LA POUSSIERE, 02/07/2006, Le Percy (France), @ salle festive (show review)
Few people attended that show unfortunately, but I guess everyone’s already on holiday. I think you all know I dislike emo. DEMANDE A LA POUSSIERE are pretty decent, although they’re 10 or 15 years behind ICONOCLAST, STRUGGLE, or even YAGE and ENVY. I had read reviews labelling CHACHI ARCOLA as an emo band, and I can see why, but I think they are more of a modern Hc band, with slow parts, fast parts, and an overall heavy sound. They reminded me a lot of later CHOKEHOLD, and were pretty good ! ASFIXIA are a total ANOMIE worshipping band from the Basque country. They’re not as good musicians as the ANOMIE members were, but they’re still good, the music is really fast (a bit more crust than ANOMIE was), but it’s hard to get past those screaming vocals. The singer actually has a great voice, when she doesn’t try to sound like Kathleen ! (Y.B.)

-
-

NAKED AGGRESSION + CHICKEN’S CALL + 14" GENERAL, 13/06/06, Grenoble (France), @ 102 (show review)
Holy shit, I missed NAKED AGGRESSION in San Francisco in 1993... and finally got to see them in ...2006 !! CHICKEN’S CALL played first, they’re a local band, and they’re pretty good. They play punk-Hardcore with a few punk-rock and melodic Hc influences. RANCID maybe ? 14" GENERAL are hard to classify ! The first song was heavy and raging punk-Hc a la HAMMERHEAD or POISON IDEA. Then, they went for folk-punk tunes (with bagpipes), and then for theatrical punk stuff reminiscent of CONTROPOTERE. Damn ! They were ok, but I would have much preferred it if they had played straight up power-punk, or pure folk. As for NAKED AGGRESSION, they were cool. The sound sucked at first, but got better in the end. It was nice to hear all those old songs, but still a bit weird to see people in their 30’s sing naïve and sloganistic lyrics like these. (Y.B.)
-
POINT OF RECOGNITION "refresh renew" Cd (Facedown)
Well, don’t let the title fool you, there’s nothing "new" or "fresh" about this Cd ; it really is typical New York Hardcore/ metal/ moshcore. I’ve heard it a thousand times before. Fans of the genre won’t be disappointed ; you got the gruff vocals, the heavy breakdowns, the chugga-chugga rhythms, the tattoos, the "stab me in the back" lyrics... oh wait ! These guys are devout christians ! All band members thank Jesus, and they sing about god too. I feel tired, stop waisting my time,... next please... http://www.facedownrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
CHINESE HAPPY "rampage" Cd (Waiting for lunch)
The cover artwork’s pretty bad, so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the first guitar riffs ; CHINESE HAPPY’s faster songs sound like early PROPAGANDHI, but one third of the tracks are acoustic/folk ballads. I won’t be surprised if they end up on FAT WRECK or EPITAPH in a few years... http://www.chinesehappy.com (Y.B.)
-
LES ORCHIDEES D’HAWAII + PLAINE CRASSE + HYACINTH, Le percy (France), 05/05/2006, @ salle festive (show review)
HYACINTH said they had lost too much money on their tour and didn’t come to the show. Nice attitude ! This is really respectful of the gig organizers and the people who drove a long way to go up there in the mountains... LES ORCHIDEES D’HAWAII are a surf/rock band from Chambery. They’re good musicians, but played for over an hour and got really boring in the end. PLAINE CRASSE kick ass ! They sound a bit like that other band from Grenoble I saw a couple months ago ; LET ME DIE ALONE. Tight and powerful anarchopunk, half-way between CRASS and POISON IDEA or something like that. Super powerful, with dual vocals and interesting lyrics. Nice show. (Y.B.)
-
CHAROGNE STONE + AJENOS A LA TRAGEDIA + NECESSIDAD DE LUCHAR, Grenoble (France), 25/04/2006, @ 102 (show review)
Fuck. We arrived late, got lost in Grenoble, and missed NECESSIDAD DE LUCHAR ! :( This is a show I had awaited for weeks. We saw most of AJENOS A LA TRAGEDIA’s set, and they were good. The music is awesome old school Hc mixed with Hc-punk, kinda like a more varied MINOR THREAT. The band was back from an Italian tour, and looked tired. I liked them better last year in Clermont-Ferrand. CHAROGNE STONE were pretty good. They’re a two-piece band playing typical, really typical "power-violence" with a strong SPAZZ influence (of course). But they’re good musicians, and seem to have a sense of humour. I enjoyed them, but I did not enjoy the bunch of drunk & violent Polish punks in the front. Why do Polish kids always send us their rednecks ? Keep them to yourself, please ! (Y.B.)
-
ROBOTNICKA + LET ME DIE ALONE + REVENGERS, Le percy (France), 10/03/2006, @ sale festive (show review)
It’s always cool to go to a show in the middle of the mountains, and see 60 people pop up from nowhere to party. Cool place, cool show. REVENGERS are a local band. 3 girls playing noisy/experimental punk-hardcore-rock. THE EX inspired stuff. Why do girls never play thrashcore or death metal for a change ? I was impressed by LET ME DIE ALONE ! They’re also a local band, and the members are very old. They play powerful old style Hardcore with a noisy touch, kinda like HAMMERHEAD from Germany, or POISON IDEA, SPAZM 151, etc. The more noisy songs bore me, but most are really good. I didn’t enjoy ROBOTNICKA’s album, but live, they were awesome. Their singer’s crazy and charismatic. They play totally goofy "electro-punk" (punk with a synthesizer, but no pop shit here) and you can see they love being on stage. Nice. (Y.B.)
-
UNLOGISTIC + STANLEY KUBI + LIMITED EXPRESS, Grenoble (France), 26/11/2005, @ 102 (show review)
We rushed to the show but only got to see a couple UNLOGISTIC songs unfortunately. Funny as always. Fast, minimalist Hardcore with screaming vocals. STANLEY KUBI, who share a common singer, sounded a bit more folk than the last time I saw them. Not my thing, but if you dig experimental Hardcore, THE EX, etc, check them out. LIMITED EXPRESS were funny as well. They play versatile, technical, noisy-Hc. The best songs reminded us of SHONEN KNIFE. Ok. (Y.B.)
-
CATHETER + WOJCZECH + J’M’EN FOUS, Clermont-Ferrand (France), 14/10/2005, @ Local AC63 (show review)
J’M’EN FOUS (I don’t care - nice band name) play experimental hardcore along the lines of THE EX, HEADACHE, RECUSANT, etc. They’re good at what they’re doing. A couple songs are ok, but not a whole set. WOJCZECH ripped. They had this wall of sound, I had rarely seen that in 15 years. Shit. Fast, heavy, powerful grind. CATHETER sounded a bit more typical, but were awesome as well. Fast thrashcore/grindcore with impressive musicians. Great show. (Y.B.)
-
WORLD BURNS TO DEATH "the sucking of the missile cock" Cd (Hardcore holocaust)
Hey this is cool. I was expecting some fashionable american punk a la TRAGEDY (because the band features members of SEVERED HEAD OF STATE, SPAZM 151, and FROM ASHES RISE), but I have to admit they rule. They play the brand of uptempo and heavy punk they are known for, and write great political lyrics that are both critical of the American government and the punk scene. http://hardcoreholocaust.com (Y.B.)
-
GROSSMEMBER "leave us alone" Cd (Bizarre leprous)
NAPALM DEATH anyone ? This is ok Polish grind, just not original enough. And it has always amazed me people would prefer to write pages worth of thanx lists, ...but no lyric sheet. http://www.bizarreleprous.cz (Y.B.)
-
ZEMEZLUC "system kanibal" Cd (Papagajuv Hlastel)
This band has been around forever. They’re from Czech, play tight uptempo punk-rock, and have put out a couple great releases. This one is ok, too. It’s not their best, but both the music and lyrics are good. http://zemezluc.zde.cz (Y.B.)
-
4 PAST MIDNIGHT "trials and tribulations" Cd (Area pirata)
Uk punk with an ’82 feel but a modern sound. Decent "street punk" lyrics. Nothing special, but an ok record nonetheless. Fans of the genre shouldn’t be disappointed. http://www.areapirata.com (Y.B.)
-
MAKEOUTMUSIC "segrenation" Cd (Self released)
If someone had made me listen to this and said it was the latest NO FX album, I would have believed them. It also sounds a bit like early NO USE FOR A NAME or PROPAGANDHI. I like it alright, and the production is good. Too bad they didn’t include a lyric sheet, nor any info on the band. 6 tracks. www.makeoutmusic.net (Y.B.)
-
SANGRIA "brasileiro de verdade..." mCd (Hardcaos)
With a name like that, guess what style these brazilians play ? Yes, it’s crustcore, and pretty powerful at that. They have a heavy sound, and may be influenced by metal and grindcore too. Indeed, at times they reminded me of POINT OF NO RETURN’s fastest songs. Not bad... but way too short ! (8 minutes) http://www.sistemasangria.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
ASSERT "riotous assembly" Cd (Hardboiled)
Their previous records were pretty cool, but this one sounds much more original and pretty much kicks ass ! They play really fast Hardcore with cool guitar solos, and socially aware lyrics. I don’t know, imagine a DEAD KENNEDYS Lp played at 75rmp with raucous vocals and different lyrics ? Nice surprise. http://www.assertkickass.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
IN THE CLEAR "leave this city in flames" Cd (Dead & gone)
The band split up shortly before this was released. It’s their second effort, and the production is much better on this one. Musically, their sound is incredibly close to ONWARD’s album, the problem is... ONWARD recorded theirs 10 years before !! It’s really typical, mid-tempo old school SxE hardcore, with really typical, not to say cliché, "positive"/personal lyrics. http://www.deadandgone.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
APPARATUS "another night of holocaust" Cd (Disarmament)
Hehe, ok, this Malaysian band is obsessed with Scandi-punk. I believe they’re only a joke-band ? But they’re ok. The lyrics are short DISCHARGE-style slogans, the music is fast dis-core, only the vocals annoy me a bit. The sound is rough but suits that music well. Decent stuff ! http://www.disarmtohell.tk (Y.B.)
-
THE HIGH & THE MIGHTY/ ANTIDOTE split Cd (G.T.A.)
Pretty decent split. Both early New York Hc bands shared a couple members, as well as a couple songs, and played the same style of music. They were heavily influenced by SSD, BAD BRAINS, MINOR THREAT... and remind me of VIOLENT CHILDREN, URBAN WASTE, THE ABUSED, etc. This Cd includes a demo, a 7", and two live sets that have a good sound quality. http://www.grandtheftaudiorecords.com (Y.B.)
-
HIGHSCORE "new fuel" cassette (Youth culture)
Lp, Ep, demo, comp° tracks, all of that on one cheap tape, and with a nice & big booklet too. These are the best tracks the band ever recorded, and it’s great, fast, raging old school Hardcore from Germany, with politically aware lyrics !! You gotta own this ! jobstofmind@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
CAN’T DECIDE Cd (Boss tuneage)
80’s Uk melodic Hc-punk band featuring ex-HERESY & RIPCORD people (can you believe it ?), and bringing to mind early melodic Hc bands like HDQ or SAMIAM (back when they still sounded punk, and not mellowed out like that shit on MTV). I listened to this discography a hundred times without making up my mind about the band. They were good, but lacked something. They either didn’t play fast enough, or not melodic enough. Still better than many of the bands coming out today. www.bosstuneage.com (Y.B.)
-
WITCH HUNT "as priotiries decay" Cassette (Fight for your mind)
This new Us band ain’t too bad. They’re like, the new HARUM SCARUM ; punk-hardcore, female vocals, and political lyrics. They also provide long explanations to their songs, which is cool (and quite rare these days). bunkobastard@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
