RAMBO "wall of death the system" Cd (625)
This is their first album reissued for the Asian market, with two split ep’s as bonus. There’s still their great first album as well as the awesome video that came along with it, the two other ep’s being only average. Unfortunately, they didn’t include the nice booklet that went with the first album, but only a photocopy of it. http://www.625thrash.com (Y.B.)
-
FROM ASHES RISE Cd (Usina de sangue)
Well, modern crust. One album and one Ep. TRAGEDY and HIS HERO IS GONE. Political yet metaphorical lyrics - Emo-crust, you know ? Not the worst of these trendy bands, but... usinadesangue@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
LOS FASTIDIOS "ora basta" mCd (Mad butcher)
4 tracks from 2003, including a nice BRIGADA FLORES MAGON cover, and two good video tracks ! Italian tight mix of Oï, Hardcore, & melodic Hc. http://www.madbutcher.net (Y.B.)
-
LOS FASTIDIOS "siempre contra " Cd (Mad butcher)
Good political lyrics, and good tight music by this long-running Italian band. This is a good album. What more can I say ? It’s like if a skinhead band would write good lyrics, and play powerful music that could not be really labelled as "Oï". Nice. http://www.madbutcher.net (Y.B.)
-
YA BASTA "toujours debout" Cd (Maloka)
Damn, I forgot to review this one. This is awesome. I saw them live twice and thought they ruled. Their first Cd was good, this one is even better. The music is killer ska with a few punk and reggae hints. It’s truly awesome. The lyrics are very political, they’re great, although I find them to be sometimes a bit naïve. But it’s always great to hear a ska band with socially aware lyrics. The band split up a few months ago and released another Cd on the same label. Buy it. http://malokadistro.com (Y.B.)
-
LYSTERIA "nausées" Cd (Kanivo chaos)
Oh shit, another record I forgot to review. I don’t know what happened. LYSTERIA were great ! I became fond of them. They used to play really powerful punk with a saxophone, pissed female vocals and a few Hardcore and metal hints. Kinda like MASS MURDERERS and POISON IDEA mixed with HEYOKA and PSYCHOSQUATT if you will. The saxophone, female vocals and metal riffs gave the band a really original touch. I think you can still find copies of this record, so don’t hesitate to order one. http://www.kanivo-chaos.com (Y.B.)
-
MIGRA VIOLENTA "Holocausto capitalista" Cd (Fight for your mind)
Geez, this recently disbanded Argentinean band changed their style a lot as compared with their first record. This is fast, manic Hardcore-punk. Short and to-the-point songs denouncing the evil of this world (pretty good lyrics actually). The music is a bit basic, it sounds like later LOS CRUDOS. If the songs were longer I would say this is boring (and 18 songs are actually a bit hard to take in a row), but since they’re short, you don’t really have the time to get bored. bunkobastard@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
OI POLLOI "fuaim catha" Cd (Combat rock)
This is the Cd reissue of the album by the same name, without bonus tracks unfortunately. This is when I stopped enjoying OI POLLOI to the full, ie when they dropped out the Oi stuff to play more "crusty" punk or whatever. It’s definitely not a bad album though, there’s some great riffs here and there, and some witty lyrics, it’s just that it’s "good" instead of being "excellent". http://www.combatrockindustry.com (Y.B.)
-
VICTIMS "...in blood" Cd (Havoc)
Powerful, typical dis-beat/ scandi-crust from Sweden. Well done, but not in the least original. Boring negative personal lyrics. http://www.havocrex.com (Y.B.)
-
THIRD DEGREE "Six years of 666/ discography" Cd (Czerwony diabelek)
I didn’t know this polish crust-grind band had recorded so many songs. They’ve been around since 1997. They aren’t really Hardcore, crust, metal or grind, more like a mix of all these styles. The best songs remind me a bit of early DISRUPT, but they’re far from being as good as them. The lyrics are great. All in all, it’s an ok record, but it lacks something to make it outstanding. rdevil@poczta.onet.pl (Y.B.)
-
KLASSE KRIMINALE "klasse kriminale" Cd (Solitude urbaine)
KK’s previous albums always kind of bored me. They weren’t bad at all, they were just so sloooow and melodic. But this one ! Damn ! What happened ? I believe they changed all the band members, didn’t they ? There’s even a female singer handling the choruses. The music is really powerful and well-produced. It’s tight punk-rock with a slight Oï touch, strongly influenced by THE CLASH (whom they cover) and SHAM 69. The lyrics are socially aware and the digipack’s nice. There’s even a funny video included as bonus ! http://solitudeurbaine.propagande.org (Y.B.)
-
DOUGHBOYS "la majeure 1987" mCd (Boss tuneage)
Wow, their first single reissued onto Cd. This is an early melodic Hc band, long before the style made it to MTV. It’s pretty good, but to be honest I was expecting something more powerful, like DAG NASTY, HDQ or BAD RELIGION. This is poppier. http://www.bosstuneage.com (Y.B.)
-
K LINE "how you gonna scare us now ?" Cd (Boss tuneage)
Second record I believe ? British melodic Hardcore with a slight post-Hardcore/ noisy feel, kinda like FUGAZI on speed, or some other late eighties DISCHORD bands. Ok stuff. Mostly personal lyrics, with a couple social hints. http://www.bosstuneage.com (Y.B.)
-
ARRACH "alternatives" Cd (Trauma social)
This sounds a bit more Hardcore than most TRAUMA SOCIAL releases. ARRACH are an ok band from Toulouse, France, playing tight punk-hardcore reminiscent (because of the vocals) of bands like TAGADA JONES, MASS MURDERERS, DISRUPTIVE ELEMENT, etc. The lyrics deal with politicians, racists, zapatistas, capitalism,... http://arrachpxhc.free.fr (Y.B.)
-
HARD TO SWALLOW Cd (Armageddon)
Discography by this mid-90’s Uk fast-core band. They were quite original, but I never really got into them, despite the really powerful production. I just didn’t like their off-beat, noisy, emo influences. But this is still ok stuff if you like fast Hardcore. http://www.armageddonshop.com/label.php (Y.B.)
-
DIRTY POWER GAME "figli della vostra catastrofe" Cd (Agipunk)
Raging and powerful Italian crust band with grind and death influences. The hateful intro is awesome, but I get annoyed by the metallic guitars. I would say they sound like EXTREME NOISE TERROR or DISRUPT, although not as good of course. The three bonus demo songs sound a bit more crust-punk, thank Dog they kicked out that female singer because she had a terrible voice. Hahaha. The lyrics aren’t even translated, but they’re of a political nature. Hey guys, if you don’t want people to download all your records instead of buying them, put more work in your booklets ! http://www.agipunk.com (Y.B.)
-
RZEZNIA "mathematic grind" Cd (Self made god)
Uuurgh, this is the most disgusting cover (back cover to be precise) I have ever seen ! I can’t even look at it or I’ll throw up. RZEZNIA kick ass. They’re a polish non-metallic grindcore band, a la early NAPALM DEATH. Great powerful sound and cool lyrics. I think I had enjoyed their first tape more... but it’s also included here as bonus !! Coooool. http://www.selfmadegod.com (Y.B.)
-
VICTIMS/ FROM ASHES RISE split Cd (Havoc)
Ok, well, two extremely fashionable current crustcore bands, from Sweden and the Usa. The sound is good, the cover art is average (has Pushead gone dull ?), the lyrics are average (kinda metaphorical and socially aware at the same time) and the music, well, it’s crustcore with a few emo, metal and "dis-beat" influences. And MOTORHEAD, did I mention MOTORHEAD ? I’m so sick of bands with no personality on their own... http://www.havocrex.com (Y.B.)
-
OI POLLOI "ar ceol, ar canan, ar a mach" Cd (Self released)
OI POLLOI are one of my all-time favourite bands, at least until the "guilty" Ep. I never really enjoyed the "crusty" Fuaim catha Lp, and I don’t like this one either. Would you believe it, they have a big modern production, and have incorporated emo-crust riffs to their sound. Yes, TRAGEDY, HIS HERO IS GONE, that kind of shit. It ain’t bad, but I have a hard time getting into it. You can’t even recognize Deek’s voice and accent because all the songs are now written in Gaelic (and they aren’t translated, which will make it even harder to sing along at shows, ha ha). Nice fat booklet. Lotsa politics. http://www.myspace.com/oipolloialba (Y.B.)
-
BOLCHOI Cd (Solitude urbaine)
BOLCHOI were a female-fronted left-wing skinhead band from the South of France. They split up right when their first album came out. I had kind of enjoyed their first demo. The production on this one is big, much too big for that kind of music if you ask me. The layout is neat but I don’t like it much, and the lyrics aren’t printed (they printed a small comic strip instead). As for the music, I don’t know, a couple songs are good, but most sound quite uninspired to me. Some are blatant CAMERA SILENS or BRIGADA FLORES MAGON rip-offs. To sum it up, this band showed potential, but didn’t live long enough to ’reach perfection’. http://bolchoi.propagande.org (Y.B.)
-
I SHOT CYRUS "tiranus" Cd (Läjä)
Of course, this one ain’t as good as their previous Cd which was absolutely perfect. How could it be ? I believe the production is a little less good, and maybe there are a bit more "weird" breaks and wanky parts. But still, this rips hard. Super-fast and super-angry Brazilian thrashcore, grrrr. Hey, how about some bonus live tracks, videos or demos next time ? Or put out a split Cd ? This one’s only 21 minute long. http://www.laja.com.br (Y.B.)
-
NAÏVE FIGHTERS "Kocka" Cd (Malarie)
I believe MALOKA were advertising this as "folk-punk", and since I enjoy folk-punk a lot, I bought it. I’m a bit disappointed ; this is much more folk than punk. Actually, it’s not really punk at all. Which doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just lacks the power and the urgency of punk-rock. But if you dig folk music (with a female singer), this makes for a nice change. Not to mention the Czech language that suits the music really well (and the CHUMBAWAMBA cover). http://malarie.ind.cz (Y.B.)

HAINEMIS D’ETAT + VARLIN + WAK, Le percy (France), 10/12/2006, @ La colo (show review)
It was freezing cold but we improvised a goofy tennis game in one of the rooms and had a lot of fun. One hour later, HAINEMIS D’ETAT started to play ; they’re a young and basic band playing typical French punk. They sounded sincere and motivated, that’s why I enjoyed them. The music was good, although the melodic guitar solos were blatantly copied from J’AURAIS VOULU and BRIGADA FLORES MAGON. VARLIN were Ok too. They’re ex-PEKATRALATAK, and sound a lot like... PEKATRALATAK (or BERURIER NOIR if you will). WAK are a typical ska-punk band, with some festive and some social lyrics. Maybe a bit too ska and not punk enough at times, but still pretty good. Nice show. (Y.B.)
-
-
S.O.L./ PACK "south east asia tour 2005" split Cd (Sangsara)
PACK play heavy and powerful modern punk-Hc in the vein of IN THE SHIT or VIKTIMS. They would fit well on MASS PROD or KANIVO CHAOS records. SOL play the same, only faster and more crust. They’re pretty good ! I like them better. They remind me of HIATUS. Modern-day punks should enjoy this album. sangsara_recs@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
MONSTRUACION "insubmissio total" Cd (Potencial Hardcore)
POTENCIAL HARDCORE have re-released this classic Spanish Hardcore Lp. MONSTRUACION is also one of the best bands I’ve ever heard. It’s just too bad their classic demo "Kornella" is not included here ! But there are four bonus studio songs which are pretty good, and a nice booklet, for a total of fourteen punk-Hardcore bombs full of melodies and tempo changes. potencialhc@nodo50.org (Y.B.)
-
L’ODI SOCIAL "no olimpigs" Cd (self released ?)
Yipeeeeee. L’ODI SOCIAL are one of the five best bands I ever heard in my life. They ripped. They were one of the first Spanish bands to play Hardcore, wrote good lyrics (of course, this was Spain, and this was the 80’s), and were strongly involved in social struggles. I just love their brand of tight and fast Hardcore with lots of breaks and tempo changes, mixed with a couple punk and melodic tunes. This Cd features their Lp as well as 3 bonus live tracks. The booklet is great, but it is sad they didn’t include a whole live set !! :( [No address provided !!!] (Y.B.)
-
INTOLERANCE "condenados a seguir luchando !" (Potencial Hc)
Shit. INTOLERANCE were awesome, and this is a great Cd to (almost) close off their "career". 6 awesome cover songs of classic 80’s spanish punk bands, plus one great live as bonus, recorded at their best, in the early 90’s. Excellent hateful Hardcore from Spain, classic stuff ! http://www.myspace.com/intolerancehc (Y.B.)
-
LAST BREATH #3 fanzine (in Serbian)
What’s this language called ? Serbian, Yugoslavian ? Damn, I wish I could understand it, because I would have loved to know what ANNIHILATION TIME, LOWPUNCH or NO MEANS NO have to say. Also includes interviews with CLOROX GIRLS, DERANGED RECORDS, DEATHTOLL, REGULATIONS and BLITZKRIEG, plus columns, reviews, show reviews, ads, photos and scene reports. The layout is brilliant and the glossy cover makes it look like a deluxe version of MRR, HEART ATTACK or REASON TO BELIEVE. yusxe@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
HEY YOU #11 fanzine (in French)
PROTESTA #81, mailorder list
This list is getting huuuge ! and is specialized in French punk-rock. It’s almost 99% French punk records, at decent prices, so if you’re a fan of the genre, get in touch with : traumasocial@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION "these days" Cd (Combat rock)
This band features members of MANIFESTO JUKEBOX (and WASTED) and it shows ! They sound exactly the same. And MANIFESTO JUKEBOX already sounded exactly the same as HÜSKER DÜ... If you’re into SAMIAM and LEATHERFACE, you might also enjoy them. The music’s good, but the rip-off is too blatant for me, and the lyrics are uninteresting. http://www.fireinsidemusic.com (Y.B.)
-
QUE VIVE LE ROCK LIBRE #28 newsletter (in French)
Un poil courte, si je puis me permettre, mais gratos et comme toujours pleine d’infos sur le punk-rock Français (sorties de disques, zines, radios, etc). traumasocial@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
RYDELL "hard on the trail" Cd (Engineer rds)
English emo-rock mixed with melodic Hc. The faster songs bring to mind JAWBREAKER or LEATHERFACE, the slower ones bring to mind THE GET UP KIDS, 1000 TRAVELS OF JAWAHARLAL or AT THE DRIVE IN. The lyrics don’t make any sense at all, except of course for the one who wrote them. http://www.engineerrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
4 OLD TOXIC SHOCK 7" EP’s Cd compilation (Dr Strange)
4 really obscure early 80’s Ep’s reissued by Dr STRANGE here. They were all released by TOXIC SHOCK records. Most of the songs are good, although none really stand out. PEACE CORPSE are quite slow, RED TIDE (pre-DOA ?) are pretty good, MASSACRE GUYS are decent too. Nothing to kill for, but you can give it a try. www.drstrange.com (Y.B.)
-
BARRICATED SUSPECTS Cd compilation (Dr Strange)
More and more reissues. Doc (from DOCTOR STRANGE) explains how TOXIC SHOCK (old Us label) and this comp° in particular had such an influence on him when he was young. I can understand, however, let’s face it, 20 years later this document is not really interesting, and most of the songs here are boring, or say, average. A couple are good, as on all comps. Maybe we should all stop reissuing old vinyls, I believe what had to be reissued already has, by now ? www.drstrange.com (Y.B.)
-
EVEN WORSE "you’ve ruined everything" Cd (G.T.A.)
More and more G.T.A. reissues. More obscure bands. I had absolutely never heard of this early New York punk band, although they were quite influential and awesome ! Those songs were recorded in 1981 & 1982, and they were much more powerful than many punk bands of that time. They had great female vocals, were probably influenced by THE AVENGERS, and probably influenced APPLE themselves. They also remind me of ATTENTAT SONORE from France. Good stuff. The lyrics aren’t included unfortunately, but the Cd comes with a really cool biography of the band and the early New York scene, written by the band-members themselves. http://www.myspace.com/grandtheftau... (Y.B.)
-
BOMBSHELL ROCKS "love for the microphone" mCd (Combat rock)
Swedish punk-rock with a slight rock’n’roll sound, like many bands these days. There’s also some CLASH elements here. The 1st song is a cheesy acoustic song, the 5th song is a total CLASH rip-off, while the 6th one sounds like a THE CURE cover. For fans of RANCID, CLASH, VIGILANTES, ENDSTAND, NEVROTIC EXPLOSION, VOICE OF A GENERATION,... http://www.fireinsidemusic.com (Y.B.)
-
MALGOBIERNO "molestar" mCd (Malgobierno)
When I first heard it, I thought to myself "oh no, not another of those typical Spanish (Chilean) punk-rock bands" but after a couple listens, it has grown on me. They sure aren’t the most innovative band on earth, but they do their thing well, and they have added a couple Hardcore influences to their punk-rock that make them stand out. Decent stuff. http://malgobierno.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
SICK TERROR "so me resta o odio" Cd (Usina de sangue)
Yep, early days discography. Their best recordings (as often with Hc bands). Super fast Hardcore/thrashcore with metal overtones, maybe grindcore and "emo-violence" influences too. The lyrics aren’t translated, but I guess they’re not too bad. 33 good tracks and some boring techno remixes in the end. usinadesangue@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
HELLSHOCK Cd (Esperanza)
Limited edition for their Brazilian tour 2005, compiling their 4 first Ep’s. Ex-members of DISRUPT and other famous crust bands playing heavy crust with dark social lyrics. Nothing special, but definitely not bad either. josimas@anarcopunk.org (Y.B.)
-
DINGO "no flattery ! No flinch ! Don’t turn your back !" Cd (T.S.O.R.)
Wow, nice surprise from Japan. I’ve read DINGO sound like OXYMORONS, but since I’m not familiar with this band, I’ll just say they play good, tight, varied and anthemic punk-rock/ street-punk ! They got me tap my toes during 45 whole minutes, and I was really surprised by the lyrics, which are good, contrary to most Japanese bands. http://www.tsor-records.ch (Y.B.)
-
APATIA "manipulacja zniewolenie" Cd (Trujaca fala)
No way, these old punks are still at it !? APATIA put out a bunch of albums in the past, most of which were good without being "perfect" either. This one is the same ; most songs are totally great, raging polish punk tunes with catchy hooks, but the first and the last ones have boring noisy elements to them, which leaves you with a bad impression when you start listening to the record, and a bad one when it ends. That’s too bad, but it’s still a great record, with good lyrics. http://www.apatia.band.pl (Y.B.)
-
LOST "fear / strach" Cd (Malarie)
Slow (well, mid-tempo), a bit heavy and a bit dark crustcore from Poland, with female vocals too. Reminiscent of NAUSEA’s slower songs or AMEBIX, or NEUROSIS at times. The sound quality and the artwork are good, but the music is too slow for me. With ex-members of HOMOMILITIA, I was expecting something better. http://www.schandmaulrecords.de (Y.B.)
-
BONEHOUSE "the fuse is lit" Cd (Mass prod)
This prolific German band still plays punk-Hc with metal overtones. They bring to mind MÖTÖRHEAD and POISON IDEA. I was a bit disappointed by this new album ; the production is too slick, too clean, there aren’t enough guitars and too many solos. It’s sad because the songs are well-written, catchy and powerful, and the lyrics are really good. Buy their previous Cd’s beforehand. http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
FICTION ROMANCE "mission insoumission" Cd (Trauma social)
I believe this is the second album by this French punk-rock band. The music is good, classic, typical French punk-rock in the LES RATS or DOBERMANN vein, but I don’t like the vocals much. The lyrics are ok, and some songs stand out, like the last one against bullfights. fictionromance@club-internet.fr (Y.B.)
-
CAUSTIC CHRIST "can’t relate" Cd (Havoc)
Everyone’s crazy about this new Us band featuring ex-members of blah blah blah. I’m not. It’s only decent punk/ Hardcore/ crust, let’s say crustcore (WORLD BURNS TO DEATH, TRAGEDY,...) mixed with mid-eighties Us Hc-punk (TOXIC REASONS, OFFENDERS,...). There’s nice moments, but on the whole, it was not original enough for me. www.havocrex.com (Y.B.)
-
BRAINBOMBS "obey" Cd (Releasing Eskimo)
I read there’s a TOTALITAR member in the band, so I was expecting some wild & fast crust, but no such thing ! This is slooow, noisy sludge/doom. Urgh. Dark, negative and depressing lyrics about serial killers, rapes and mass murders. Hmm... Maybe they listened to too much GG ALLIN ? [Releasing Eskimo, Po box 31126, S-40032 Göteborg, Sweden] (Y.B.)
-
MASSICK Cd (Human meat for sale)
Hehe, fans of G-ANX rejoice ! MASSICK, from Germany, play great technical thrashcore mixing fast grindcore parts with pop, funky or garagey parts. Excellent musicians. Great stuff. I was disappointed with the lyrics ; contrary to the almighty G-ANX, MASSICK’s ones don’t make any sense. But the music’s good. humanmeatforsale@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
RECOVER "won’t fade away" Cd (One voice)
This band was featured on the "lion city hardcore" comp something like 10 years ago ! It’s nice to see they’re still at it, and haven’t mellowed out ! I don’t know why, Singaporean bands have always been influenced by New York Hc a lot. RECOVER play tight and powerful old school NyHc, bringing to mind stuff like SHUTDOWN or maybe SICK OF IT ALL. The music’s fast and the vocals are aggressive, RECOVER are really quite good ! http://www.myspace.com/lchcrecover (Y.B.)
